Frequently Asked Questions
-
How do I get a solar quote?Getting a quote is simple! Reach out to our sales team, and we’ll arrange a time for one of our representatives to either visit your home or set up a video call. Our mission is to make solar energy easy to understand while addressing any questions you may have. To begin, we’ll ask for a copy of your utility bill. This helps us collect the information we need about your property and roof.
-
Will my solar panels work during winter?Yes! According to a NAIT study, snow accumulation only reduces your system’s output by 3-4% annually. Plus, the panels have a slippery surface that helps snow slide off naturally.
-
Is Alberta a good province for solar panels? It sure is! Alberta’s sunny climate makes it one of the top locations in Canada for solar energy. While we do have cold winters, the province gets plenty of sunlight throughout the year.
-
How do solar credits work? When your solar panels generate more power than your home needs, the extra energy is sent to the grid. Your energy provider will give you credits for the excess power based on the rate you’ve signed up for.
-
How does the electricity retailer track my production?Once your system is installed, your utility provider will install a bi-directional meter that tracks the power you send to and receive from the grid. In many places, such as Edmonton, these meters may already be in place.
-
Will solar work if the power goes out?No, because solar systems are connected to the grid, they won’t function during a power outage as a safety precaution. However, you can add a battery to your system, which allows you to store energy and keep essential appliances running during outages. If you're interested in this option, feel free to reach out to your sales representative for more details.
-
Can I add a home battery to my solar system?Yes, a home battery can be added to your solar setup to keep your home powered during outages. Contact us to learn more about backup battery options.
-
Can I expand my solar system in the future?Yes, solar systems are flexible and can be expanded. If your energy needs grow, you can add more panels and increase the size of your inverter to match.
-
Can I add an electric vehicle (EV) charger to my install?Definitely! We install home charging stations that are compatible with all electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles. Ask our sales team for more details!
-
Will solar increase my property value if I plan to move?Yes! Solar panels typically increase the value of a home, as buyers recognize the long-term energy savings and lower utility bills. In many cases, the cost of the solar system is added to the overall property value, making it a great investment whether you plan to stay or sell.
-
What happens to my solar system if I sell my house? If you sell your home, the solar system will be included in the sale. If the system was financed, the loan will typically be paid off with the sale proceeds. The new homeowner will enjoy the benefits of having a solar system included in their mortgage.
-
What is “net metering”?Net metering allows microgeneration properties to both draw power from the grid and send excess power back when your system generates more than you use. A bi-directional meter tracks these exchanges, so your utility bill reflects the difference between the energy you use and what you send to the grid.
-
What is the Alberta Micro-Generation Program? The Alberta Micro-Generation Program allows you to produce enough energy to cover your annual electricity consumption. If you produce more, your energy company will automatically credit you for the extra electricity.
-
How can I tell if my roof is suitable for solar? We’ll conduct a thorough site survey before moving forward with your project. One of our team members will inspect your roof from inside your attic and use a drone to assess the exterior. This detailed evaluation ensures we understand the condition of your roof and can recommend any necessary reinforcements before installation.
-
How long does it take to install the system? Most residential solar installations are completed in 2 to 5 days.
-
Should I consider solar if my roof isn’t new?Yes! Some homeowners choose to finance their roof replacement alongside their solar installation, making it more affordable. During our site survey, we’ll check the condition of your roof and recommend any necessary repairs. Solar panels can even help extend your roof’s lifespan by providing shade and reducing sun exposure.
-
How long will it take from signing to installation? On average, installation takes place within 2-4 months after signing. However, keep in mind that unexpected issues, such as permit delays or supply shortages, can sometimes cause minor setbacks. We’ll keep you informed throughout the process and work to resolve any issues as quickly as possible.
-
What government grants are available for solar? The Canadian government is currently offering an exciting 0% financing option for up to $40,000, repayable over 10 years, to help you go solar with ease. Many municipalities also offer low-interest financing through the Clean Energy Improvement Program (CEIP). Ask us for more detailed, up-to-date information.
-
Is the application process complicated? While there are a few steps involved, we’re here to make it as smooth as possible. You'll need to sign some paperwork, and if you're applying for the federal Greener Homes Grant, CEIP (Clean Energy Improvement Program) or Loan, there will be an application to complete. It takes a bit of effort, but we’ll walk you through each step and provide support along the way to ensure everything goes smoothly.
-
What are my payment options? We offer various payment methods to suit your needs, including bank drafts, e-transfers, direct deposits, online bill payments, and credit cards.
-
What kind of warranty comes with my solar system?Solar panels typically come with a 25-year production warranty, guaranteeing that even after 25 years, your panels should still produce about 85% of their original output. This is known as the production warranty. Boreal Connected Homes also offers a 5-year workmanship warranty, which covers any issues caused by installation errors, such as roof leaks. Additionally, we offer inverter warranties to match the panel’s 25-year production warranty for extra peace of mind.
-
Will hail damage my solar panels?Solar panels are built to be tough and resilient, so it’s quite rare for them to get damaged by hail. Each solar module goes through thorough testing to ensure it can stand up to the elements before it reaches your home. If you’re still feeling a bit unsure, you might want to check with your insurance provider about adding your solar panels to your home insurance policy for extra peace of mind. We're here to help you feel confident in your solar choice!
-
What maintenance is required for a solar system?Solar panels require very little maintenance. Rain and wind usually keep them clean, and we offer monitoring services to ensure your system is performing at its best.
