Riverbend • A Newly Built Home in Need of Some TLC

Entertainment, Lighting and More.

This large modern home built above the river valley was newly completed when the builder contacted us on behalf of their client. Some basic rough in had been done at the TV locations and three LG 65UK6300 televisions had been installed in the great room and family room, but it needed some TLC as unsightly cables were running on the surface of the wall to each TV. They also requested music in multiple rooms, new televisions for the bar and gym, and a theater in a large unused area in the basement.

A Clean and Modern Theater

When we began the design phase of the theater, the client asked us to keep it clean and modern. They had no desire to see any speakers and requested that we keep renovations to the new home to a minimum.

Because there was no rough in for theater wiring, we opted to do a 3.1 system behind an acoustically transparent screen. Three Episode ES-HT700-IWLCR-6 in-wall speakers were used for the left, right and center channels, and paired with an Episode ES-SUB-IW-DUAL8 in-wall subwoofer. The speakers were powered by an Integra DSX-3 home theater receiver and an Episode EA-AMP-SUB-1D-500R subwoofer amplifier.

We mounted the 120” Dragonfly DF-SL-120-UAW perforated screen to a custom built wood frame that allowed us to incorporate three Philips Hue Lightstrip + for screen backlighting. The Hue light strips allowed us to use Hue’s sync capabilities to match the color on the left, right, and top of the projected image and increased the perceived contrast of the image on screen. The dazzling light show Hue puts on, with its range of 16 million colours, makes for a truly immersive cinema experience.

For the projector we used a Vivitek HK2299 which boasts a native 4k resolution with HDR capabilities. The rich colourful images it creates make for some stunning visuals.

For control we decided to use URC’s MxHomePro universal remote and hub. This would allow us to control the Hue lighting as well as keep the components out of sight. The system was easy to use with simple icons for cable, Chromecast Ultra and gaming systems. To keep the components and wires hidden we opted for two of Norstone Designs Khalm AV stands that we mounted to the wall side-by-side.

Music for Everyone

This client loves to entertain, but unfortunately no wiring or architectural speakers were installed as part of the build, so we opted for a Sonos system throughout the home. We installed Sonos One speakers in three of the bedrooms, the kitchen, the office and the rooftop patio. The voice-controlled speakers with Alexa built in not only allowed family members to play songs from their Spotify family account easily, but added voice to control to their existing Hunter Douglas PowerView shades and Philips Hue lighting.

The great room and the family room each received a Sonos Playbar and Subwoofer mounted to the bottom of the TV. In the gym we installed the smaller Sonos Beam.

Color of Every Hue

After the client saw the Phillips Hue lights in action in the theatre, they asked for more.  Philips A19 white and colour ambiance bulbs were installed around the house so that each room could be adjusted to perfectly match the mood.

Phillips Hue light strips behind a BDI shelf

In the library we installed more Hue light strips on the back of a BDI Kite 5305 shelf system, supplied by us, which greatly enhanced this elegant book shelf.

Phillips Hue light strips behind a headboard

And, with a teenager in the house, a request was made to backlight the headboard in her room. We used the new, extremely bright, Philips Outdoor light strip. It looks like a flexible piece of neon tubing and has full Hue capabilities. It was installed all the way around the headboard, in between the wall and the bed. The look was exactly what this young client was looking for.

Televisions Everywhere

New televisions were installed in the home gym and bar areas. In order to stay consistent we used LG 55” 55UK6300s which were of the same series as the previously installed 65” TVs.

LG TV in wet bar

The TV in the bar was centred with the existing millwork and the cable box was concealed behind it. The gym television was installed with a Sonos Beam so that the client had the option of listening to the TV over the noise of the exercise equipment or listen to their favourite music while watching a show with subtitles.

Undoubtedly our favourite part of this project was the Hue lighting. We can’t wait to go back in the spring and install more of Philips’ new line of landscape lighting as well as more in the house. A close second favourite was the bright, high-resolution images and crystal-clear audio available in the home theater. This client really let us be creative which resulted in some unique results. This feature rich home has a great combination of easy to use controls, high performance gear and personalized spaces with electronics to match. All these bells and whistles will keep this client happy for a very long time.
